Project approved for removal of mines along Croatian-Hungarian border

OSIJEK, May 19 (Hina) - Under the IPA Cross-Border Cooperation Programme on cooperation between Croatia and Hungary from 2007 to 2013, the green light has been given for the EUR 3.5 million "De-mine" project aimed at the removal of mines along the Croatian-Hungarian border in the area of Baranja.

Osijek County Prefect Vladimir Sisljagic and representatives of the Croatian Mine Action Centre reported about this project in Osijek on Thursday.

The project is expected to start later this year and will be carried by the Croatian Mine Action Centre in the eastern Croatian town of Draz and by the police from the Hungarian region of Baranya.

A 1.6 million square metre territory is to be combed for booby traps left over after Serb insurgents occupied that part of eastern Croatia in the early 1990s.

To date, 38 residents in Osijek County have died in land mine explosions and 177 have sustained injuries.
