ZAGREB, June 27 (Hina) - During Wednesday's debate on amendments to the Law on the Financing of Local Self-Government, the parliamentary benches of the opposition and national minorities urged the government to postpone the start of
decentralisation, i.e. the transfer of some obligations and funds from the state to the local level, from July 1 to January 1. The benches of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), the Democratic Centre (DC), the Istrian Democratic Assembly (IDS), the Croatian Party of Rights/Croatian Christian Democratic Union (HSP/HKDU), and the minorities' bench do not object to decentralisation but maintain it cannot be entered in only four days, without basic preparations. The benches of the ruling coalition's five parties maintain there is no ideal date to start decentralisation and that a delay would be futile.(hina) ha sb
