The deputies of the then Croatian parliament adopted a
Constitutional Decision on the Sovereignty and Independence of the
Republic of Croatia and a Declaration on Croatia's sovereignty and
independence.
Only a few hours later, the Slovene parliament adopted a decision
declaring the country's independence.
Shortly after that, the Yugoslav army attacked Slovenia and on June
3, Yugoslav army tanks entered Croatia's eastern region of
Baranja.
An internationally endorsed three-month moratorium was then
imposed on the Constitutional Decision and the Declaration. The
moratorium expired on October 7, 1991 and the JNA and Serb
paramilitary forces stepped up attacks on Croatia.
On October 8, 1991 Croatian parliamentary deputies made a historic
decision to sever all constitutional ties with the Socialist
Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) in line with its inalienable
right to self-determination and the will of its citizens voiced at a
referendum in May 1991 and the Constitutional Decision on the
Sovereignty and Independence of the Republic of Croatia, adopted on
June 25, 1991.
