Leading ethnic Albanian politicians described that day as historic for the Albanian people and entire Kosovo, saying that the world on that occasion supported the Albanians' struggle for liberation. They also thanked NATO member-countries for help. Ibrahim Rugova, the president of the Democratic Alliance of Kosovo, assessed that great progress had been made in all the fields in the past two years. for the Albanian people and entire Kosovo, saying that the world on

While Kosovo Albanians celebrated this day with much enthusiasm,
Serbs in the northern part of the town of Kosovska Mitrovica staged
protests and insisted on the return of Serbian police and army in
the area. Their leader, Doctor Milan Ivanovic, urged the immediate
replacement of the incumbent UN civilian administrator of Kosovo,
Hans Haekkerup.
