ZAGREB, June 4 (Hina) - At Monday's meeting with leaders of five
union federations, the government proposed a 4232 kuna basic wage
for public and civil servants, namely seven percent less than the
current basic wage which amounts to 4,551 kuna, president of the
Association of the Independent Trade Unions Davor Juric told
reporters.
An agreement on basic wage should be reached by Thursday, the
government's final deadline for the agreement with trade unions.
Should they fail to reach an agreement, the government will set the
basic wage by a regulation, president of the Croatian teachers
trade union Dalimir Kuba. He added wages for June would be paid in
line with the new basic wage, but should negotiations be late, the
payment of wages could be late as well.
Juric said he was "pleasantly surprised" with the government's
offer, adding that according to his sources in the government, the
government on Friday decided to propose a basic wage lower than
4,000 kuna.
Kuba believes the government's proposal is not entirely
acceptable, and the effects of the proposed basic wage will reflect
on wages in certain services later. He said the trade unions would
demand that negotiations on branch collective agreements be held.
The so far numerous union simulations, calculated according to the
4,551 basic wage, show that wages of public and civil servants could
drop by 10-30 percent.
Croatian Prime Minister Ivica Racan said earlier today the cut
would be more than ten percent.
