the professional service, a spokesman for the Bosnian Croat-Muslim
Federation's Defence Ministry said on Sunday.
On Saturday afternoon the application of members of the second
Guards Brigade, situated in Mostar, was completed successfully,
spokesman Antun Mrkonjic said.
Before the crisis, caused by a decision of the leadership of the
Croatian Democratic Union of Bosnia-Herzegovina (HDZ BiH) to
disband Croat units in the federal army, there were 7,225 soldiers
and officers in the HVO.
According to the data available to the ministry on Sunday, the
largest number of HVO soldiers and officers have renewed the
contracts and thus respected provisions of a 16 May agreement.
Under the agreement, the incumbent Defence Minister Mijo Anic, the
former commander of the first guards district, General Zlatan Mijo
Jelic and Jelic's deputy, Brigadier Mario Bradara, agreed that all
soldiers and officers, who had professional contracts before the
crisis, would be enabled to come back into the active military
service.
The ministry is now going to check the status of all the soldiers and
officers who have asked the renewal of the contracts in order to
establish whether they meet the necessary standards and
regulations for the continuation of their professional engagement
in the federal army. It will also work on the appointment of the
commanding staff.
