CROATIA'S FOREIGN TRADE DEFICIT USD 1.3 BILLION

ZAGREB, June 8 (Hina) - Croatia's exports in the first four months of 2001 amounted to USD 1.42 billion while imports amounted to USD 2.7 billion, which sets Croatia's foreign trade deficit in the said period at USD 1.3 billion and its export/import ratio at 52.3 percent, the State Statistics Institute reported. Compared to the same period last year, Croatia's exports increased by 1.2 percent while imports rose by as many as 21.9 percent. As in previous periods, Croatia's main foreign trade partners in the first four months were European Union countries, to which Croatia exported USD 784.5 million worth of goods, mostly from the manufacturing industry. EU imports, consisting mostly of road vehicles, amounted to USD 1.5 billion. In relation to 2000, exports to the EU dropped by 4.9 percent while imports rose by 24.6 percent.
