LJUBLJANA, June 5 (Hina) - Slovenia's Foreign Minister Dimitrij
Rupel will tomorrow participate at the constitutional assembly of
"Austria's Benelux", as some described the ideas of Foreign
Minister Benita Ferrero Waldner on strategic partnership she
offered Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary, the Czech Republic and
Poland.
The Slovene news agency STA reported the initiative could grow into
an alliance, but only after the entry of the five countries into the
European Union.
Immediately after the initiative was mentioned, Slovenian media
began speculating that Austria intends to impose itself to the five
countries as a patron and condition their accession into the
European club with "schenghen" restrictions and ceasing a free flow
of people based on the Habsburg opposing and joint traumas
characteristic for the Central European region. The reservations
have diminished, however, considering the fact Slovenia is drawing
closer to the EU.
