ZAGREB, May 21 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivica Racan on Monday was not able to say whether the salaries of persons employed in the state and public sector would be decreased and whether the basic wage would be the same, namely
4,551 kuna (US$545.7), or less. At this moment I cannot tell you precisely, everything is still being calculated and this job must be completed by late this month, the Prime Minister told the Croatian Radio. Racan said, however, the basic wage would be decreased but not by the amount some trade unions had been announcing. The Prime Minister positively assessed last week's letter of the president of the Croatian Chamber of Commerce and heads of the seven biggest food-processing industries -- namely a request to the government to protect the domestic production as much as possible without neglecting competition. This is the policy of the government, Racan stressed.(hina) it
