Bosnian presidency lifts suspension on arms export

SARAJEVO, May 23 (Hina) - The three-man presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday lifted a suspension on the export of arms and military equipment from the country.

The Bosnian presidency concluded at an urgent session today that the country's government (the Council of Ministers) had earlier this month defined new rules and procedures for controlling the issuance of licences for the export of weapons and military equipment.

The new rules enable the Bosnian intelligence and security agency (OSA) to conduct additional checks as to whether the export of arms is in compliance with the international rules for the trade in weapons.

The state leadership has recently decided to suspend delivering weapon supplies after it was established that some of those weapons were smuggled in countries on which the United Nations imposed bans on the import of arms.

The presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina has decided to suspend the arms export after it was established that the weapons had been smuggled in countries in the black list, the presidency's Croat member Zeljko Komscic said on 20 April but he stopped short of saying which countries had received those supplies.

Komsic said that the Bosnian authorities had collected documentation about people involved in the arms smuggling.

He said that Bosnia had not stopped exporting the arms but that this process "will be carried out under strict supervision".

Factories of weapons and military equipment in Konjic and Gorazde then protested against the presidency's decision which they said would force them to lay off workers.
