Ethnic Croats concerned over Serbia's election legislation

SUBOTICA, May 23 (Hina) - Serbia's new legislation on the election of parliamentary deputies and the funding of political activities has caused fear among Vojvodina Croat representatives that this ethnic minority could be left without any representative in the Serbian state parliament, Radio Subotica reported in its programme in the Croatian language on Monday.

The Democratic Alliance of Vojvodina Croats (DSHV) has only one deputy in the Serbian parliament after the ruling Democratic Party ceded that seat to its representative.

However, this one mandate will become unreachable due to stricter criteria for the election to the state law-making body, DSHV president Petar Kuntic told the radio on Monday.

Under the legislation, it is necessary to collect 10,000 verified signatures to apply for the polls.

"This is unattainable for small political organisations such as we are. The possibility of joining a coalition remains, but we must see who we can run in the elections with," Kuntic was quoted by the radio as saying.

He said that this was contrary to the bilateral agreement on the protection of respective minorities between Croatia and Serbia, notably in the light of the fact that Croatia has adopted appropriate regulations for the Serb community.

The DSHV has decided to inform international players and agencies about this problem.
