ZAGREB, May 8 (Hina) - The Croatian Romany Club denounced the
conduct of citizens who insultingly cried out "Gypsy, Gypsy" and
catcalled Croatian President Stipe Mesic during his visit to the
Fourth Guard Brigade in Split.
Following today's meeting between Interior Minister Sime Lucin and
representatives of the Romany community in Croatia, a statement was
issued which said the incident also insulted citizens of Romany
ethnicity who voted for Mesic.
The Romany community is especially insulted by the fact Mesic was
called by the name of the Romany people with derogative
connotations. Mesic advocates the application of the Constitution
and the functioning of the law-based state for all citizens, the
Romany club asserted.
The club particularly decried "the silent legalisation of
violence" against Croatian Romany by individuals and groups, and
called on their members to refrain from "ekscess conduct".
The Romany voiced confidence in the legal system and the elected
government authorities that they will protect and provide security
to all citizens, including Romany.
Should such behaviour towards Croatian Romany continue, the Club
will notify international institutions which deal with the
protection of human rights, the statement read.
