allegations in connection with an incident which occurred in the
southern Adriatic city of Split yesterday when President Stipe
Mesic attended an anniversary celebration of the military's Fourth
Guard Brigade.
"All members of the Croatian Armed Forces bore witness in Split
yesterday to a high degree of professionalism and a dignified
attitude," the ministry said in a statement, adding "the insulting
messages to President Mesic came from a group of civilians."
A group of civilians, retired members of the Fourth Brigade and
relatives of its members killed during the war, booed Mesic by
shouting "Gypsy" and "thief" when he arrived at a ceremony marking
the Brigade's tenth anniversary at the Dracevac barracks.
Reporting about the event, some media among else stated that the
insults at Mesic had been hurled by soldiers, which according to the
Defence Ministry is an "untruth damaging to the reputation of the
Croatian Armed Forces."
The Ministry also regretted that the incident occurred inside a
barracks, calling on everybody to behave in a dignified manner and
keep politics outside of barracks.
