the government was aware of the difficulties and it still needed to
do a lot, adding, however, the government was on the right path and

Racan believes that persons with lower life standards, unemployed

right to criticism.
Sending best wishes on the occasion of the international Labour
Day, Croatian President Stipe Mesic said the current government did
not fulfill all of the electoral promises over the past year. He,
however, expressed belief the government would fulfill all
electoral promises because Croatia was a law-based state.
President of the Croatian Association of Trade Unions Zdenko
Mucnjak and president of the association of workers' unions Boris
Kunst also sent messages on the occasion of May Day, harshly
criticising the government for the poor economic situation in the
country.
The number of unemployed persons is rising, workers' social rights
are decreasing, prices of foodstuffs are increasing on a daily
basis and the standard of living is dropping, Mucnjak said.
Kunst demanded the passing of an integral economic development
strategy, privatisation which would force owners to increase
production and employment rate, social and tax systems' reforms,
and the respect of fundamental workers' rights.
