CROATIA'S LOCAL ELECTIONS TO COST AROUND 5.8 MILLION

ZAGREB, April 22 (Hina) - On 20 May Croatians will go to the polls to elect members of 422 municipal and 123 town councils, 20 county assemblies and the assembly of the City of Zagreb. According to estimates of the State Election Commission, the coming local elections will cost some 50 million kuna (around 5.88 million dollars). Candidates who will stand for the election can promote their programmes from 4 to 18 May, when the campaigning is going on. The ban on electioneering begins on 19 May and lasts until 09.00 pm on the election day. The ban is shortened in comparison to the past when it took 24 hours - the day prior to the election and the entire election day. However, at the past elections first preliminary results were known before the midnight and, therefore, this time the ban on electioneering will end on 09.00 pm 20 May, a deputy head of the State Election Commission, Jakov Miletic, explained.
