VUKOVAR, April 13 (Hina) - The County Court Council in the eastern Croatian town of Vukovar on Friday found former commander of the 4th police station in Vukovar's Borovo Naselje Dragisa Cancarevic, 1961, guilty of charges. The
Vukovar state prosecutor's office accused Cancarevic of war crimes against civilians and war crimes against war prisoners. The court sentenced Cancarevic to 13 years in prison. During a trial which began in May 2000, Cancarevic was accused of committing crimes in Vukovar-Srijem and Osijek-Baranja counties in 1991 and forming prisoners' centres, as a member of the occupation militia. He was also accused of violating the Geneva conventions on the protection of civil rights during the war and treatment of war prisoners. Cancarevic has the right to appeal to the Croatian Supreme Court. Neither Cancarevic, nor his attorney Sreten Baljk commented on the verdict.(hina) it sb
