ZAGREB, April 5 (Hina) - The Croatian Parliament on Thursday adopted a draft law on the Croatian National Bank (HNB), which increases the independence of the central bank, but also underlines its responsibility towards the Parliament.
The HNB Statute will be confirmed by the Parliament, and the Parliament's Committee for Election and Appointments, will suggest candidates for governor and members of the HNB Council. The law also expanded the circle of people who may join the HNB Council, who must be Croatian citizens with experience in monetary, fiscal, banking and law fields. The members, who must not be state officials, will be appointed for a six-year period. The Parliament also adopted a decision committing the government to forward to the Parliament a draft law on banks by the end of June. The law would stipulate that, besides the HNB, other institutions authorised by the law could perform control over banks' businesses. M
