BELGRADE, April 4 (Hina) - In the past 11 years people close to Milosevic's regime made some 18 billion dollars worth of profit through smuggling and 'grey economy', said an advisor with the National Bank of Yugoslavia (NBJ), Miroslav
Zdravkovic. Foreign trade was "the most suitable sector" for making extraprofits, he said, adding that some 800 million dollars worth of profits were made on the basis of the 'faulty' invoicing of special-purpose imports alone. Zdravkovic is a member of a newly-established government commission in charge of investigating corruption in the former regime. These data are still not official and the commission will continue working on them, he said. The acquisition of enormous wealth by some people in the Milosevic era culminated in 1993, the year of hyper-inflation and greatest political instability.(hina) rml
