BELGRADE, April 1 (Hina) - Serbian Justice Minister Vladan Batic on
Sunday dismissed speculations that Yugoslav former president
Slobodan Milosevic was apprehended under orders of the
International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
"Milosevic's arrest was not carried out under ICTY orders and is not
connected to his extradition to the Tribunal," Batic told a news
conference in Belgrade.
Not dismissing cooperation with the UN tribunal, Batic said the
decision on Milosevic's possible extradition to ICTY will be made
only after Yugoslavia adopts a law on cooperation with the
tribunal.
The justice minister claims all conditions "for a fair trial for
Milosevic" have been created in Belgrade.
Batic is the first to confirm Sunday that Milosevic has been
remanded at Belgrade's Central Penitentiary.
All Serbian officials who spoke about Milosevic's arrest during the
past two days adamantly claimed his apprehension was in no way
connected with demands of the United States regarding a decision of
the US administration that assistance to Belgrade was conditional
upon its cooperation with the ICTY.
