BELGRADE, March 31 (Hina) - The uncertainty surrounding the arrest
of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic has continued into
the first hours of Saturday afternoon, while his supporters,
police, and members of the press are engaged in minor clashes and
provocation in front of his residence in Dedinje.
Around 11.30 hours, some 150 Milosevic supporters broke through a
police cordon which kept them some 200 metres from the villa and
came closer to an upstairs entrance.
A somewhat riotous group of people in front of the villa has been
shouting "We Are Not Giving Slobo" and "Slobo, Slobo". A woman
assaulted a journalist with the neck of a broken bottle but did not
hurt him.
According to officials from Milosevic's party, their leader is
still inside his residence.
This was confirmed by Serbian Interior Minister Dusan Mihajlovic,
who said Milosevic was presently under some sort of "voluntary
house arrest" and that his only way out was to surrender.
Despite rumours that Milosevic might keep his "promise" given
police negotiators last night, when he said they would "not get me
out alive," few believe he will take his own life despite a genetic
predisposition to suicide. Both his parents killed themselves.
It has been officially confirmed an arrest warrant has been issued
based on a charge for abuse of office.
This was confirmed by Interior Minister Mihajlovic who repeated his
demand to Milosevic to surrender, as on the contrary he would be
apprehended "by hook or by crook."
