NEW YORK, Jan 30 (Hina) - Croatia supports the holding a United Nations General Assembly special conference on children and is preparing for it, Croatia's permanent ambassador to the UN, Ivan Simonovic, said in New York on Monday.
Addressing a session of a committee in charge of preparing the conference, Simonovic outlined a Croatian government report on the realisation thus far of objectives set at a 1990 world summit on children. The ambassador also spoke about government policy which starts with the acknowledgement of the children's best interests, in accordance with the international convention on children's rights. Simonovic also endorsed a proposal for a preliminary regional conference which would gather representatives of 52 European and former Soviet Union countries in Berlin in May. Croatia has announced active participation at the Berlin
conference, as well as at the UN General Assembly special
conference in New York on Sept. 19-21, when a new ten-year world
programme for children will be harmonised.
