observers on Prevlaka by another six months, until July 15. #L#
The resolution confirms that the situation on the southern-most
Croatian peninsula bordering with Yugoslavia is peaceful and
stable but that Croatia and Yugoslavia have not resumed
negotiations on a lasting solution for this question.
"By accepting another six-month mandate Croatia has demonstrated
patience and good will for Prevlaka's return under the full control
of Croatian authorities to be achieved through agreement and with
all security guarantees to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and
Montenegro," Croatia's permanent representative at the U.N., Ivan
Simonovic, told Hina on Friday.
Croatia is adamant in protecting its national interests but is also
aware of the importance of peace and stability in the region and is
therefore willing to give Yugoslavia another chance, after the
recent change of authority in the country, Simonovic stressed.
The Croatian ambassador said the Security Council's reaction to
Croatia's stand as presented in a letter by Foreign Minister Tonino
Picula was favourable.
In case the talks fail, Simonovic adds, the Security Council's
attitude and the assessment that Croatia has done all it could would
be very important for the final outcome.
