VUKOVAR TOWN COUNCILLORS DISCUSS RETURN, RECONSTRUCTION WITH PARLIAMENT SPEAKER

ZAGREB, Jan 29 (Hina) - Croatian Parliament Speaker Zlatko Tomcic met on Monday a delegation of town councillors from the eastern town of Vukovar, who proposed the establishment of a state committee in charge of the town's reconstruction and development. The councillors requested that parliament accept their amendments when adopting a law on Vukovar, for which they received Tomcic's support. The councillors complained that none of the 14 MPs elected in the Vukovar area had once addressed parliament with regard to problems the town was faced with or attended any session of the Vukovar Town Council. The delegates said they had sent a letter to the presidents of the Republic, parliament and government warning them about the situation in Vukovar with regard to economy, reconstruction, unemployment and refugee return. The rubble which still has not been removed from the town is a major problem

The delegates said they had sent a letter to the presidents of the Republic, parliament and government warning them about the situation in Vukovar with regard to economy, reconstruction, unemployment and refugee return. The rubble which still has not been removed from the town is a major problem, they said, adding Vukovar was still a town without a bank and shops. The councillors objected that Croat refugees had to move out from Serb flats on the ground of court orders while Serbs occupying Croat flats did not want to leave unless given similar accommodation. The councillors believe the Erdut agreement should be revised and expressed dissatisfaction with the current bill on Vukovar. They warned that the existing law on the reconstruction of family houses had completely devastated the town. Returnees who wish to reconstruct or finish their houses on their own should be exempt from Value Added Tax (VAT), they said. (hina) rml
