BRUSSELS, Jan 24 (Hina) - NATO on Wednesday again reiterated no
evidence has been found making a direct connection between th use of
ammunition with depleted uranium and leukaemia.
A dozen countries which have deployed troops in Bosnia-Herzegovina
and Kosovo carried out research and none have shown an increased
rate of cancer cases in relation to soldiers who did not serve in the
region, chairman of NATO's ad hoc committee for depleted uranium,
Daniel Spechard, told a news conference in Brussels.
The committee, in charge of establishing facts with regards to the
use of ammunition with depleted uranium, gathers representatives
of member states which have deployed their troops in the Balkans,
non-government organisations and representatives of Croatia,
Bosnia-Herzegovina and Yugoslavia.
The committee has been established to secure as great a degree of
transparency as possible in the issue because we have nothing to
had, Spechard said, reiterating a statement by NATO's Secretary
General George Robertson: we share everything, we hide nothing.
NATO's spokesman Mark Laity said as of today the public has access
via the Internet to a detailed map of Kosovo, with marked 112
locations where the ammunition was used. The establishing of exact
locations in Bosnia-Herzegovina is yet to be completed.
