ZAGREB, Jan 22 (Hina) - Parliamentary speaker Zlatko Tomcic on
Monday signed a statement in support of Amnesty International's
Campaign Against Torture.
The campaign was launched in mid-October last year, when members of
Amnesty International Croatia surrounded Cvjetni trg square in
downtown Zagreb, symbolically proclaiming it a torture-free zone.
On Wednesday, the organisation's members will surround the
parliament building. Soon it will also be the turn of the
government, the president of the republic's office, and the
ministries of the interior and foreign affairs, they said after
meeting Tomcic.
According to the parliamentary speaker, "the Amnesty International
initiative is a praiseworthy symbolic gesture, as present-day
relations among states have to rely on real democracy, which is
founded on the respect of basic human rights."
Tomcic said his public support to the Campaign Against Torture
confirmed Croatia's commitment to human rights.
"Given that torture and other cruel or degrading conduct or
punishment are violations of human rights, which is prohibited in
all circumstances, I will do everything in my power to make the
Republic of Croatia and the whole world a torture-free zone," read
Tomcic's statement of support.
The delegation acquainted Tomcic with their human rights promotion
programme and their efforts aimed at the passing of a special law on
civilian conscription, a programme of 12 key guidelines to train
state servants for respecting human rights, and raising public
awareness in connection with the Campaign Against Torture.
