On this day Croatia became a full member of the international
community and was provided the opportunity to become involved in
all international and integration processes, Euro-Atlantic
associations, Mesic told Croatia's national television Monday
night.
We got the opportunity to promote everything we wanted --
democratic processes, civil freedoms and the functioning of the
law-based state, he said.
Stressing the "imposed war made many things impossible for us",
Mesic said as an internationally recognised country, Croatia
claimed victory over the aggressor in the war, but lagged behind in
democratic development.
"Now, after democratic elections, after the presidential
elections, Croatia is once again becoming a country of
opportunities, opportunities for us to achieve all our goals,"
Mesic asserted.
As the main goals Mesic underlined Croatia's "presence in the
international community", "remaining a factor in the international
community, creating a legal society in which citizens will be equal
under law and achieving security for citizens".
