ZAGREB, Jan 15 (Hina) - Croatia's President Stjepan Mesic,
accompanied by his wife Milka, on Monday gave a Christmas and New
Year reception for representatives of the diplomatic corps
accredited in Zagreb.
The dean of the diplomatic corps and Apostolic Nuncio to the
Croatian capital, Msgr. Giulio Einaudi, wished the best, in the
most cordial manner, to President Mesic, his family and aides as
well as all to the Croatian authorities and people for this new
year.
Describing 2000 as an eventful year, Einaudi assessed that the last
year's developments left traces in the political and social life of
Croatia.
"We are glad to see the progress Croatia has made in improving the
coexistence among the population and in improving its ties with the
international community," the Catholic dignitary said in his
speech.
"At the beginning of this new year we would like to see this process
continue and all obstacles overcome. May all noble goals to which
Croatia aspires be accomplished," he said promising to the Croatian
head of state the sincere cooperation and concrete support.
Addressing the ambassadors, President Mesic asked for assistance
from the international community, explaining that Croatia would
not be able to solve its economic problems by itself in the adequate
time term.
"Help us - not with relief aid - but by encouraging direct
investments (in the country) on a profit-oriented basis," he
emphasised.
We do not want anything else but to become your economic partners
now that we are political partners, Mesic added.
"Therefore I call on you not to be only your countries' ambassadors
to Croatia. Be, at least to some extent, Croatia's ambassadors in
the world," Mesic told them.
The president thanked the foreign diplomats for everything they had
done so far in the promotion of ties between their homelands and
Croatia.
