The US Government hopes the decision would help the progress of
regional economy and strengthen trade and investments in south-
east Europe, State Department deputy spokesman Philip Reeker
said.
The property of the former Yugoslav federation was blocked during
the 1990s in a series of economic sanctions the USA imposed on the
regime of the former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic due to
his involvement in the conflicts in the area.
The Slovene government's commissioner for succession to the former
federation, Rudi Gabrovec, said the decision did not represent any
dramatic development.
He said that the decision of the USA Office of Foreign Assets
Control did not refer to the immovable assets of the Socialist
Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the property of the former
central bank and people linked with Milosevic. Gabrovec added that
the property of the former federation abroad would remain blocked
until all five successor-states ratified a succession agreement.
