The report about the seizure of 6,000 rifles stored in three
containers on the Rapoca ship of the Losinjska plovidba company was
released only on Friday evening even though the Gioia Tauro police
said the seizure took place on November 22.
Prosecutors from the town of Palmi interrogated the ship's crew but
did not sentence it or the commander.
The rifles were made in 1940 and are in perfect firing condition,
which was the likely reason for the additional interviews. The
ship's papers list the arms as "old rifles". The police said an
additional probe was ordered because the rifles are in firing
condition and have "offensive potential".
The three containers which stored the rifles were headed for
Norfolk in the U.S., with the final destination being Vancouver in
Canada.
