ZAGREB, Dec 11 (Hina) - The Croatian government's public relations
office on Wednesday issued a statement in reaction to an article in
dailies that some hundred scientists, artists and pedagogues had
yesterday forwarded a petition to the parliamentary president,
requesting that the school system not undergo reform. #L#
The statement says that the Project of Croatia's Education System
for the 21st Century, which the government unanimously adopted on
November 28, had been drawn up based on two documents, one of whose
consultants was academician Vladimir Paar, who, according to the
press, initiated the signing of the petition.
The government's public relations office says that work on the
documents lasted the past two years and were available to the public
the entire time.
The government opted for the above project on the basis of
discussions and analyses of educational systems in Europe, and
forwarded it to the parliament for an open discussion to determine
its final form, the statement reads.
According to today's press, about 80 scientists, artists and
pedagogues have requested that Croatia keep its existing Austrian-
Hungarian-Croatian model of education "4+4+4", and prevent the
introduction of the suggested, Swedish nine-year model.
The signers of the petition claim that a reform of the education
system would be a waste of energy and money, and could result in a
lesser quality of education. They say that it would be better to
invest the funds into improving the expertise and material
situation of teachers.
They request that their motion be discussed equally with the
government's school reform suggestion.
