ZAGREB, Nov 28 (Hina) - Two of the 46 banks in Croatia (Zagrebacka Banka and Privredna Banka Zagreb) account for almost 45 percent of the assets of the bank sector and their profit accounts for some 55% of the total bank
profit.

Banka and Privredna Banka Zagreb) account for almost 45 percent of
the assets of the bank sector and their profit accounts for some 55%
of the total bank profit. #L#
The first four banks, which are owned by foreign groups, account for
almost 60% of the bank sector assets and more than two thirds of
total bank profits.
According to temporary data of the Croatian National Bank, the
assets of business banks in Croatia at the end of September totalled
163 billion kuna (21.93 billion euros), which is 9.8% more than at
the end of last year. More than 90% of all assets are held by foreign
banks.
The banks' pre-tax profit totalled 2.17 billion kuna, while last
year's pre-tax profits totalled 1.23 billion kuna. According to
data business banks submitted to the HNB, 43 banks made profits and
three incurred losses in the first nine months of this year.
The leading bank both according to assets and profit is Zagrebacka
Banka with assets totalling 42.4 billion kuna (an increase of
3.06%), which accounts for slightly more than 26% of the overall
assets of the bank sector. According to data for the first nine
months of this year, Zagrebacka Banka (owned by Italy's UniCredito)
made the highest pre-tax profit, totalling 716.5 million kuna,
which accounts for one third (32.9%) of all banks' profits.
Zagrebacka Banka is followed by Privredna Banka Zagreb (with
Italy's IntesaBci as the majority owner) with assets of 30.6
billion kuna, which is 10.9% more than at the end of last year, and
accounts for 18.8% of the total assets of the bank sector. The
bank's pre-tax profits total 471.2 million kuna, which is 21.6% of
the total profit of business banks in Croatia.
The two banks account for 44.8% of all assets and 54.6% of the pre-
tax profit.
The two banks are followed by Raiffeisen Austria, Splitska Banka
(the majority owner is Bank Austria Creditanstalt), and Hypo Alpe-
Adria-Bank, a member of Austria's Hypo Group.
Placed eighth is the Croatian Postal Bank, with the Croatian state
as the majority owner, with assets of 5.94 billion, a growth rate of
98.8%, and a pre-tax profit of 46.5 billion kuna.
