This was Annan first visit to Croatia in his capacity as U.N.
Secretary General. Annan visited Croatia in late 1995.
Annan and his host, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, discussed
current world issues, such as global terrorism and the need for
encouraging global development, as well as the situation in Croatia
and the region.
Talks with Prime Minister Ivica Racan particularly tackled
Croatia's cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for
the former Yugoslavia, the issue of refugees and displaced persons
and regional cooperation. Annan expressed satisfaction with the
fact that yet another U.N mission, the one on Prevlaka (UNMOP),
would be successfully completed. He said the UNMOP would end after
Croatia and Montenegro, namely Serbia, achieve an agreement. Racan
assured the U.N. official the agreement would be concluded before
the expiry of the U.N. mandate on December 15.
Prior to his visit to Croatia, Annan visited Sarajevo, Pristina and
Belgrade.
