Tomcic is heading a parliamentary delegation on a two-day official
visit to Hungary at the invitation of Hungarian Parliament
President Katalin Szili.
On the first day of the visit, Tomcic spoke with Szili, Deputy Prime
Minister Elemer Kiss, and representatives of the Croat minority in
Hungary. The main topics of the talks with the deputy prime
minister, Tomcic told Hina, were economy, transport infrastructure
between the two countries, privatisation in Croatia, Hungarian
investments in Croatia, tourism, the Rijeka port, integration
processes, and the status of the Croat minority in Hungary.
Croatia and Hungary represent a good example of how to deal with
minority issues in Europe, Tomcic said after talks with the Croat
minority.
According to the last census, there are 15,600 Croats living in
Hungary. According to the president of the Croatian Self-
Government in Hungary, Mijo Karagic, the Croat community in Hungary
numbers 50,000. There are three Croatian schools and high schools
in Hungary and Croatian is taught in 35 schools. Hungarian Radio
broadcasts two hours of programme in Croatian every week.
