About 400 workers protested outside the government's building
between 10.00 and 13.00 hours, demanding the payment of their wages
and the government's assistance in finding a new strategic partner,
because the Austrian-Russian concern "Trubo Impex" from Vienna
withdrew from the Sisak Ironworks project.
"Vice Premier Slavko Linic has explicitly told us that wages will no
longer be paid from the state budget, but the government will see to
it that 2,000 workers receive late wages through the Privatisation
Fund," the president of one of the Ironworks' union, Ivo
Marjanovic, told the protesters.
The government will also assist in evaluating the reliability of
the new strategic partner. Candidates already exist and will be
presented to the union representatives.
The workers were bitter about the outcome of today's negotiations
because union representatives did not receive a written guarantee
for the payment of wages.
After the three-hour protest, the workers dispersed peacefully.
