This was stated by the head of the Croatian Crafts Chamber's (HOK)
commerce guild, Boris Vukelic, at the third meeting of HOK traders,
which started in Zagreb on Thursday. Vukelic added that small
merchants were losing to big chains of stores, which were mostly
spreading in towns where customers have greater buying power.
It is therefore unclear if the capital of foreign chains of stores
invested in commerce is productive and stimulates employment and
domestic products or is rather speculative and aimed at amassing
profit, Vukelic said.
Today's meeting focuses on the problems of small traders in today's
market environment, including commercial legislation, work hours
in retail trade, taxes, financial control, grey economy and the
protection of traders-craftsmen in increasingly strong
competition with large chains of stores.
