The 9th Guard Brigade was set up by volunteer units that defended
the Lika region and stopped enemy activities in that section of
Croatia. During the Homeland Defence War, 56 members of the Wolves
guard brigade were killed.
Members of the 9th Guard Brigade who took part in battles from Lika
to Maslenica, the Medak pocket, Summer 95 operation and the Storm
operation were greeted by Croatian Armed Forces Chief-of-Staff
Petar Stipetic.
Croatian Defence Minister Zeljka Antunovic told the soldiers that
they could be proud of their tradition and heroism and their great
contribution to the development and strengthening of the Croatian
army and the Republic of Croatia.
"Face all the good that you have done, but also face everything that
occurred which at times was not so good," Antunovic said. "It is not
up to us, or me to judge some bad events from the past. Appropriate
institutions exist to determine what in fact occurred, in a
dignified manner, and estimate whether anyone was responsible,"
she added.
She said that responsibility certainly did not lie with the
Croatian army, the Croatian people, or with honourable soldiers and
their commanding officers.
Antunovic said that with the restructuring of the Croatian army, it
should become strong and prepared to respond to new challenges.
