SPLIT, Oct 26 (Hina) - The 58th anniversary of liberating Split from

For the first time after 12 years, the event was attended by
representatives of the city leadership and social and political
life, alongside almost all associations from World War Two, as well
as honorary consuls in the city.
About a hundred gathered people were addressed by Split Mayor
Slobodan Beros who said that there were a lot of residents who
consider this day as very important in the history of Split's
freedom.
"This day 58 years ago marked the return of Istria and Dalmatia to
their motherland. This is a historic event and Split should mark it
with dignity every year," the mayor said, adding that anti-fascism
was European civilisation's highest achievement, and all of its
residents participated in the liberation of Split.
The event began with a Croatian anthem and paying respect to those
killed during the People's Liberation War. A Croatian flag was
hoisted across the wall of the stage of Split's city hall, as well as
the Croatian coat-of-arms, and a big photograph of Josip Broz
Tito.
A member of the Presidency of the Association of Anti-Fascist
Fighters, Antun Adoric, spoke about the historic days. City
authorities were asked to return the names of streets which were
changed after the Homeland War, and to restore insignia of the NOB
which had been removed or changed.
A request was sent to the parliament to support the adoption of a law
on spreading fascist and anti-Semitic ideas, as well as national,
religious and any other intolerance and inequality among
citizens.
