A spokeswoman for the government in the Republic of Srpska, on
Wednesday said that a report, compiled by the entity's defence
ministry, confirmed the violation of the arms embargo imposed on
Iraq as well as the fact that the Orao factory for planes was
directly involved in that banned activity.
Spokeswoman Cvijeta Kovacevic said that at its session on Wednesday
the government had asked for additional checks in the business
activities and financial transactions of the said company from the
north-eastern Bosnian town.
The government also insisted on the punishment of responsible
persons, who should be held accountable for illegal activities in
relation to the breaches of the arms embargo in Iraq. This covers
responsible persons not only in the factory but also in the defence
ministry and the Bosnian Serb army's headquarters.
In the past two months the authorities in Banja Luka refted the
accusation of the U.S. Administration that this Bosnian entity had
been delivering spare parts and military equipment to Iraq.
After the U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo handed over documents on the
concrete evidence to the Bosnian authorities, the Serb entity's
authorities decided to take more serious measures and expand an
investigation in the case.
According to the available data, "Orao" provided spare parts to the
Iraqi army for their MIG 21 aircraft.
