ZAGREB, Oct 19 (Hina) - A founding assembly of the Croatian Writers'
Society (HDP) was held in Zagreb on Saturday. Critic and
lexicographer Velimir Viskovic was elected president. #L#
The assembly convened a month after an initiative meeting at which
some writers who exited the Society of Croatian Writers (DHK)
discussed the founding of a new society.
Participants at the founding assembly agreed that there was a
possibility of dual membership in both writers' societies.
The HDP will advocate a better position of literature, the
protection of copyrights, establishment of a literary agency, the
strengthening of union rights of writers, and the introduction of
young writers into the society, as many as possible.
Speaking about the reasons for the establishment of the new
writers' society, Viskovic said that writers opposed "various
malformations in the DHK". According to him, that society served
political purposes, with dilettantes and "resignation of numerous
members".
He said that the DHK "all these years fought against the liberal
currents among members", and stressed that the politicisation of
the new society would not be allowed.
Speaking about some criticism in the public that the HDP was a "pet"
of the incumbent government, Viskovic said that they had not even
received one kuna from the government. He did not exclude the
possibility of cooperating with the DHK when it comes to the
protection of literature and culture.
The new society so far numbers about 100 members.
