ZAGREB, Oct 12 (Hina) - A spokesperson for the Croatian government
on Saturday refuted speculation about an agreement between the
government and the UN war crimes tribunal about General Janko
Bobetko's plea to an indictment the Hague-based tribunal filed
against him, as claimed in the state television's central evening
newscast. #L#
Talking to Hina, spokeswoman Sanja Kos said the evening newscast
ran a "feature which, using arbitrary structures, provides
incorrect information and conclusions as to the resolution of the
case of General Bobetko".
"Claims in the feature speculating about an agreement between the
Hague tribunal and the Croatian government about General Bobetko's
plea to the indictment are entirely incorrect. There is no such
agreement between the Croatian government and the Hague tribunal,"
Kos said.
Talks about Chief Prosecutor Carla del Ponte's arrival in Zagreb
are in the final stage, she added.
Quoting unofficial sources, the state television newscast said
that del Ponte was preparing a first in the Hague tribunal's
practice, the possibility of having the 83-year-old Bobetko enter
his plea in her presence in one of Zagreb's courtrooms or at his
home. Judges at The Hague would follow this by video-link. Due to
his impaired health, Bobetko would then return home or go to a
hospital for treatment. According to the newscast, this precedent
is the result of negotiations between Zagreb and The Hague.
The newscast also stated that del Ponte would visit Zagreb on Oct.
23 due to the "Bobetko case".
