Speaking at a UN thematic session about the New Partnership for
Africa's Development (NEPAD), Simonovic said that there were no
funds for economic and social development of African countries, and
added that their governments and administrations were
insufficiently developed, many were suffering the devastating
consequences of the AIDS epidemic, and some were venues of armed
conflicts.
The Croatian Ambassador said he promised the ECOSOC would do
everything in its power to assist and speed up Africa's
development, and get international financial institutions
involved.
The discussion on Africa was opened on Monday by UN Secretary-
General Kofi Annan who recalled that two years ago, the
international community had committed itself to halve the number of
the poor in Africa by the year 2015.
