In this year's first half, as much as 69.05 percent of foreign
investments went into buying Dubrovacka Banka and Rijecka Banka
shares.
Foreigners also made direct investments into hotels and motels (8.4
percent), business and management counselling (5.5 percent), and
the production of pharmaceutical products (five percent).
According to the central bank's statistics, almost half of foreign
direct investments (49.3 percent) were made by Austria in the first
half of 2002. Italy follows with 27.3 percent, Germany with 11.5
percent, France with 7.3 percent and the Netherlands with five
percent.
In the period from 1993 through mid-2002, foreigners invested
almost 7.3 billion dollars into Croatia.
Investments in this period were marked by the privatisation of the
Croatian Telecom, investments into the banking sector and the
pharmaceutical industry.
More than a quarter of investments into Croatian companies were
made in the area of telecommunications (27.6 percent), slightly
less than a fifth (19.7 percent) into financial mediation
(banking), while the pharmaceutical industry accounted for 14.7
percent of investments.
Over a half of foreign direct investments have in the past nine
years been made by Austria (participating with 28.5 percent) and
Germany (24.1 percent). Following are the United States (14.9
percent), Luxembourg (5.4 percent) and Italy with 4.3 percent of
total investments.
