SDP: THERE IS NO GREAT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GOVT. AND PRESIDENT

ZAGREB, Sept 25 (Hina) - There is no significant or grand dissension of attitudes between the Government and the President regarding the Hague-based tribunal's indictment against General Janko Bobetko, a Vice President of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Zeljka Antunovic, stated on Wednesday night following an address to the nation by Croatian President Stjepan Mesic in regard to the indictment.
#L# A series of statements in the president's speech point to the current situation in the country such as an attempt to radicalise the situation by individuals and certain political options, Antunovic said. Mesic specifically distanced himself from sections of the indictment and the omissions on behalf of the UN tribunal, she added. Antunovic pointed out that claims that the tribunal is not bringing into question the legitimacy of the military actions and the Homeland Defence War need to be checked. She added that the legitimacy of military actions in the Homeland War cannot be brought into question because these were legal actions to liberate occupied territory. The SDP official disagrees with Mesic's claim that the government failed to previously organise talks between Bobetko and the tribunal, adding that this was a neglect on behalf of the UN court because during the co-operation by Zagreb with the tribunal, the Government asked that prior to any indictment being issued the suspect should first be spoken to. It would be dangerous to stop co-operating with the tribunal, but in co-operation with it, we need to dispute the indictment against Bobetko, Antunovic said. SDP believes that it is necessary to dispute the tribunal's indictment against General Bobetko and to utilise all legal means for this, Antunovic said. She believes that the section of the indictment that refers to plans for genocide is not acceptable and should be disputed. SDP supports the idea that anything that occurred during the Homeland War and should not have, should be tried. (hina) sp ms
