general election, the race is becoming very uncertain after the
electorate has started turning towards national parties. #L#
A public opinion poll conducted last week by the US National
Democratic Institute indicates that the three leading national
parties have gained the support of six percent more voters in the
race for the state parliament's House of Representatives.
This refers especially to the Party of Democratic Action (SDA),
which is currently as popular as the Social Democrats (SDP). Each
enjoys the support of 13 percent of constituents. The Serb
Democratic Party (SDS) has also recorded an increase in popularity,
enjoying the favour of 15 percent of voters.
The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) has stabilised its position,
being popular with nine percent of the electorate.
Despite the increase in popularity, the national parties still lack
the majority which would be necessary to form the executive
authority. The total tally of their votes is still below 40
percent.
The parties which consider themselves moderate at this moment may
count on some 50 percent of seats in the state parliament.
The election of the three-man state presidency, on the other hand,
is far less uncertain. Last week's public opinion poll indicates
that Dragan Covic, Haris Silajdzic, and Mirko Sarovic are sure-fire
future members.
