As for a Croatia-Slovenia deal based on a recent agreement between
the two countries' prime ministers, Tomcic said it constituted the
concretising of the existing Croatia-Slovenia agreement on local
border traffic and cooperation which should ensure fishing in a
smaller area of Piran Bay.
Tomcic hoped the deal would defuse all tensions and reduce the
number of possible incidents in the northern Adriatic's bay, thus
urging state bodies in both countries to try to solve the border
issue in a peaceful atmosphere, or agree on international
arbitration.
Tomcic said he personally viewed this latter possibility as the
only serious way out.
He said there should be much less "fanaticism" on both sides and
more confidence that the Croats and the Slovenes are capable of
solving the issue of fishing in the contentious part of Piran Bay by
themselves.
