Thursday adopted a national family policy draft which contains a set of measures aimed at improving the demographic situation in the country and protecting the family. The demographic situation in Croatia is grim and worrying, Labour and Welfare Minister Davorko Vidovic warned. Croatia's population has been continually decreasing. In 1991 Croatia had a population of 4.5 million and in 2001 its population was 4.4 million, or 2.6 percent less, the minister said. In the 1990s Croatia had a negative population growth for the first time, and over the past ten years the number of deceased was by 55,000 higher than that of newly born children, Vidovic said.
