POZEGA, Aug 21 (Hina) - Addressing reporters in Pozega after a
working meeting with the Pozega-Slavonia County police, Interior
Minister Sime Lucin announced the possibility of organising
community police in the units of local self-government. #L#
Community police would perform the tasks which are in the
jurisdiction of towns and town councils and are currently partly
performed by community watch. Since the organisation of community
police requires other legal changes, it could start next year.
Lucin said that the security situation in the area of
responsibility of the Pozega-Slavonia County police was very good,
particularly in the Pakrac-Lipik area, where almost 1,000 pre-war
Serb residents returned without any incidents or ethnic strife.
Speaking about the reorganisation of the ministry, Lucin said that
European Union standards were consulted in this regard and that the
number of policemen in Croatia exceeded those standards, partly
also because the borders were controlled by the police.
