Late last week unidentified perpetrators felled a Catholic cross
erected in the town centre in honour of Croatian soldiers.
Local Croat officials claim that Serb returnees are threatening to
kill the local parish priest, breaking into the church drunk and
ringing the bell in the church steeple. Croat officials also claim
that Serb returnees to Drvar often sing provocative nationalist
songs late at night.
Local Serb politicians say that Drvar must become what it was before
the war - a majority Serb town.
Following a military operation by Croatian forces almost seven
years ago, the local Serb residents fled the town. In the meantime,
about 10,000 Croat refugees from about 40 Bosnian municipalities
settled in Drvar. Under the Dayton agreement, Drvar was included in
the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina. It is estimated that to date
about 5,000 pre-war Serb residents have returned to their homes in
the Drvar region.
