SARAJEVO, Aug 20 (Hina) - Bosnia must establish a state-level
defence ministry if it wishes to join NATO's Partnership for Peace
programme, SFOR chief commander in the country, John Sylvester,
warned members of the Bosnian Presidency on Tuesday. #L#
SFOR spokesman Scott Lundy told reporters in Sarajevo that General
Sylvester had sent a letter to the three Presidency members in order
to help resolve all dilemmas concerning the Partnership for Peace
programme.
Lundy said the SFOR wanted to resolve the issue completely.
In his letter, Sylvester recalled that there were several
preconditions which Bosnia must fulfil in order to approach NATO
structures, the main one being the establishment of a unified
defence ministry.
The general's letter followed a repeated refusal by the Republika
Srpska government to accept any kind of integration of military and
defence structures which are currently separated by entity
borders.
