The award will be given to President Mesic on Saturday's ceremony,
which will be held as a part of the ABA's 125th annual assembly.
The ABA executive committee's head, Homer Moyer said President
Mesic's leadership was crucial for Croatia's commitment to
democratic principles.
The decision on the award recipient is made by about 5,000 members
of the Central and Eastern European Legal Initiative (CEELI), who
are mainly judges or attorneys.
Some 800 guests - ABA members, American state officials and
diplomats - are expected to attend the dinner which will be held in
honour of the Croatian President.
The ABA, regarded as a very influential society in the United
States, is a volunteer association of over 400,000 professionals
who are mainly judges or lawyers.
Until now the award was bestowed on Czech President Vaclav Havel and
his Slovakian and Bulgarian counterparts, Michal Kovac and Peter
Stoyanov respectively.
